Qualifications
- An applicant for admission in a master's or doctor's are program must be a holder of an appropriate bachelor's or master's degree.
- An applicant whose degree is not in line with the program he/she intends to pursue may be admitted but will be required to take prerequisite courses.
Requirements
The following are the requirements for admission:
- Duly-accomplished application form (GS Form 1);
- Recommendations from two/three former professors or supervisors (GS Form 2) to be submitted by them personally or through mail to the Graduate School;
- Original copy of transcript of records from the last school/educational institution attended and original copy of birth certificate;
- General weighted average of 2.5 or better in the BS or 1.75 in the master's degree for admission to the master's or doctorate degree, respectively;
- A non-refundable application fee;
- Two copies each 2" x 2" and one 1" x 1" colored pictures with white background; and
- A “passed" rating in the Graduate Registration Examination (GRE).
Over and above these requirements, foreign students should submit the following documents:
- A copy of birth certificate/authenticated passport;
- Two copies of the official transcript of records written in English authenticated by the Philippine Embassy in the country of origin;
- Permit to study issued by the Bureau of Immigration;
- Four copies of personal history statement duly signed by the applicant written in English and in his/her national alphabet and stamped with his/her personal seal, if any, and containing among others his/her original recent 2" x 2" colored photograph with white background and his/her original left and right thumb marks;
- Two passport-size colored pictures with white background;
- Documentary proofs of support to cover expenses incidental to his/her studies (e.g. bank statement, scholarship/fellowship grant);
- Authenticated police clearance certificate issued by the national police authorities in the country of origin;
- Medical Health Certificate (HIV, drug, etc.) issued by an authorized practitioner in the country of origin;
- Student visa; and
- Certificate of passing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or English Language Test (ELT).
Deadline for Submission of Application
Applications for admission to graduate studies must be received by the Office of the Graduate School not later than the following dates:
- February 28 (for the Summer Term)
- April 30 (for the First Semester)
- September 30 (for the Second Semester)
Status of Admission
Admission is either regular or temporary as determined by the Admission Committee based on the following criteria:
Regular
- The degree to be pursued is in line with the applicant's bachelor/master's degree and
- Grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 for the master's degree and 1.75 for the doctorate degree.
Temporary
- The degree to be pursued is in line with the program finished by the applicant but his/her GPA is below the grade requirement.
- The bachelors'/master's degree is not in line with the degree pursued. A student on temporary status must obtain a GPA of at least 1.75 or 1.5 for the master's and doctorate levels, respectively, within the first two semesters of residence, otherwise he/she shall be automatically disqualified from pursuing the degree. Registration New students can only enroll upon presentation of the notice of admission. Old students must present duly accomplished GS clearance in the preceding semester. Enrollment is within the registration period prescribed in the University Calendar. A student who enrolls beyond the regular period is charged a late registration fee. VIEW COURSE REQUIREMENT
Core courses are prescribed foundation subjects to enhance student's preparedness in research undertaking. The major courses are chosen from the subjects offered for the program. The cognate courses for the master's degree may be chosen from any one field of specialization. For the Ed.D. or Ph.D. Linguistics programs, 6 units of cognate courses may be chosen from one field of specialization. For the Ph.D. Rural Development, cognate courses can be 6 units each in two areas of specialization or 9 units in one area of specialization.
