Faculty mentors of MMSU - College of Teacher Education (CTE), were tapped by the Science Teacher Academy for the Regions (STAR) of DOST - Science Education Institute (SEI) to lead a training on Design Thinking for Innovative Instruction and Assessment held on October 13–15, at Fort Ilocandia Hotel, Laoag City.
The Region 1 Twinning Capacitating and Mentoring Program (CAMP) by DOST-SEI, in partnership with MMSU and Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), aimed to capacitate science and mathematics educators in designing innovative, learner-centered, and technology-driven instructional and assessment strategies.
Serving as lecturers and facilitators were MMSU-CTE faculty and DOST STAR mentors led by Dr. Rosabel Acosta, project coordinator for MMSU, with Dr. Mark Joseph Pastor, Dr. Vida Antonio, Dr. Edrian Saraos, Dr. Romelyn Lagura, and Assoc. Prof. Christy Ann Rahon. Together, they guided participants through the five stages of the design thinking process, empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test, focusing on its practical application in classroom instruction.
Dr. Pastor discussed “Redefining Instruction and Assessment with Technology and Artificial Intelligence,” while Dr. Acosta shared strategies for “Integrating Appropriate Assessment Tools for Effective Instruction.” Meanwhile, Dr. Lagura, Dr. Antonio, Dr. Saraos, and Assoc. Prof. Rahon led the sessions as workshop facilitators.
MMSU Vice President for Academic Affairs Aris Reynold Cajigal attended the event and delivered a message on behalf of University President Dr. Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. In his address, Dr. Cajigal underscored the important role of teachers in designing meaningful learning experiences and urged educators to make use of the Internet of Things (IoT) to close learning gaps and foster innovation in education. He noted that developing creative and adaptable teachers is key to promoting 21st-century learning.
The DOST STAR Twinning Project focuses on strengthening teacher education institutions, promoting innovation in teaching and learning across various regions.
