MMSU Lab Schools advance to national science olympiad

The University Laboratory School (LS) excelled during the National Science Club Month (NSCM) 2025 celebration spearheaded by the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Inc. (PSYSC), held September 6-7 at La Union National High School, San Fernando, La Union.
In the PSYSC Science Olympiad - National Eliminations, the Laboratory Elementary School (LES) team composed of Athena Sophie Andres, Zion Charl Baguiao, and Jameela Padron secured 2nd place, coached by Mr. Kenn Runel Basto.
Meanwhile, the Laboratory High School – Batac (LHSB) junior high team of Jasper John Tumamao, Aevan Josh Jalani, and Theo Rico Toledo claimed 1st place, with Tumamao also recognized as Top Scorer for Region 1 under the guidance of Prof. Rhea Cabrera.
Another LHSB team from the senior high school bracket, composed of Atoze Alonzo, Gabriel Onera, and Maximus de los Reyes, placed 2nd, with Alonzo emerging as Top Scorer for Region 1, coached by Prof. Mignon Cecilia Diego.
Beyond the Olympiad, LHS Batac topped other NSCM events. In the ENgneering Science Challenge, Felix de los Reyes and Bleian Zyke Rasco emerged as champions, coached by Prof. Diego and Prof. Jayferson Panilo. In the I Press Play (IPP) - Bracket III, the Young Explorer’s Club, composed of Clare Ordonia, Richie Khier Verzales, and Jewelly Nereigne Dutdut, won the People’s Choice Award.
Two LHSB students also earned leadership positions in the PSYSC Region 1 Council: Jewelly Nereigne Dutdut as Executive Vice Chairperson and Gabriel Onera as Secretary.
Notably, all three MMSU lab school teams ranked among the top 20 qualifiers in their respective brackets, advancing to the national competitions set on September 27– 28, 2025, in the National Capital Region (NCR).
University Lab Schools Principal Philistia Mercuria Bagayas praised the students, stating, “Our students continue to inspire us with their brilliance and resilience. Their achievements epitomize our school’s vision to cultivate critical thinking, innovation, and academic excellence. We are confident they will make our school and MMSU proud as they advance to continental challenges.”
The PSYSC Science Olympiad remains one of the country's most celebrated inter-school quiz competitions, fostering the next generation of young scientists and researchers nationwide.
