MMSU-COE dep’t chair ranks 3rd in Materials Engineering Certification Exam

A faculty-administrator at the MMSU College of Engineering (COE) became one of the top achievers in materials engineering, ranking third in the recent Materials Engineering Certification Examination. Engr. Arlene Mia Ruguian, Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was sworn in as a certified materials engineer on January 25.
The exam, held on September 28-29, 2024, was the second to be administered by the Materials Engineer Certification Board under the Institute of Materials Engineers of the Philippines since its inception in 2023. Despite being relatively new, the certification has quickly gained recognition in the field of engineering.
Materials engineering focuses on developing and improving materials to create better products. They play a role in the innovation of materials in various industries, ensuring sustainability and efficiency in products and technologies.
Engr. Ruguian shared her gratitude for passing the certification, emphasizing that becoming a certified materials engineer is a responsibility. “It is a commitment to endeavor innovation and continuously observe quality and ethics in materials engineering. Although new to many, materials engineering is now the forefront of innovation; after all, we develop new products, and we improve many things using different materials.”
A graduate of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering in 2015, Engr. Ruguian’s expertise in materials has been strengthened through years of academic and professional experience. She previously served as the Chief of the MMSU Center for Innovative Materials in Emerging Applications (CIMEA).
MMSU OIC-President Prima Fe R. Franco expressed her commendations to Engr. Ruguian for topping the certification exam while serving as a faculty member at the university. “Her achievement manifests that continuous learning and growth are essential in a field that never stops evolving.”
